Jabberwock
November 2009
Queen of Hearts Costumes and the University of Waterloo's Off-Campus Dons sponsored "Down the Rabbit Hole" a costumed ball. It was themed as an Alice in Wonderland event, I didn't want to be another Alice, Rabbit, Hare, Hatter or Queen of Hearts (the most popular costumes by guess, proven by attendance). My mind turned to the Duchess (Wonderland), the Gryphon (Wonderland) and the Jabberwock (Through the Looking Glass). I decided the Jabberwock would be the easiest to pull off in the amount of time I had.
I made the costume from modifying clothes. Three pairs of snakeskin patterned spandex pants make up the costume. One pair is the legs of course. Another pair is the tail and a cut off leg that became the head. The last pair is the shirt. The outfit is prettied in accents of purple, orange and pink (I am a girl after all). The claws are plastic drinking cup painted with marker and attached to latex gloves, the eyes a heavy orange plastic bag I cut up and markered and the teeth are made from a cut out paper plate coloured with pink markered gums. Way to use the picnic set. |
Princess What's-Her-Name

Found out friends of mine were planning to attend Video Games Live and take part in the costume contest as Earthworm Jim and Evil the Cat. I asked if I could join them as Princess What's-Her-Name and the answer was a wonderful yes that sparked a ton of awesomeness.
First, the costume. I spent a long time looking but finally found a yellow bra that fit me loosely enough I could get it over a blue microfibre top. I covered the bra with a sheer fabric and hand sewed on beads as an accent. The modded bra took the longest effort. The crown was a hoot.
The crown is made from a plastic cola bottle! Spray painted gold, nail polished red, bejewelled. It was hot glue gunned onto the cowl. I made the cowl from a velvet turtleneck I cut off of a shirt. The antenna are pipe cleaner. The wig had to be fed through the cowl (after I put both on) through a tiny hole in the headpiece. The stripey stockings were nearly impossible to find, but I was eventually successful. I didn't get a chance to finish modifying the second pair of stockings to cover my thighs.
The other costumes were made by my friend, the master costumier, and are so awesome! Jim's head is a spandex sock with plastic eyeballs that have sculpted spandex lids pulled over them and the frame and teeth of Evil the Cat are imposing metal work.
The best part was meeting Tommy Tallarico who had composed the music for the Earthworm Jim video game. He stopped by backstage to see us (someone had told him Earthworm Jim was competing). We waited until nearly the end of the meet & greet (long line) to talk to him like he'd asked. He was thrilled to see EWJ characters, and we were thrilled to meet him. It was a total blast!
